Oldies radio as we "knew" (but we play it here on Oldies 103!) it didn't kick off really until 1972. In the 60's most stations were Top 40 stations, playing the same 30-40 songs over and over again. However, by the late 60's some stations started incorporating "older" music to their playlists. These stations wanted to appeal towards adults that didn't want to hear the same 30-40 songs over and over again. So by 1971, a station out of Phoenix, AZ called KOOL-FM adopted a format that was the first of its kind. A format that focused on 1955-some current music. Later on in 1972 a station out of NYC called WCBS-FM switched to an Oldies format. After the release of American Graffiti in 1973 slowly stations started incorporating this new Oldies format. By 1982, other big cities started reeling in Oldies stations. By the mid 80's stations such as, WOGL, KRTH, KLUV, WODS & WDRC were all oldies. By 1990 all medium to large cities had at least 1 Oldies station and almost all were on FM. In the early 2000's Oldies radio stations started slowly weeding out their 1955-1964 Oldies. By the mid-late 2000's almost all Oldies stations were incorporating a new type of Oldies format called "Classic Hits". Classic Hits focuses on the era between 1965-1989. By the 2010, stations such as WCBS, KRTH & KOOL removed all their pre-1964 Oldies and played only a select number of 60's songs per day. However, WDRC-FM still held on to their Oldies however, they would leave by 2012. By 2013 most if not all of the previous Oldies stations played no more 60's music, perhaps 1-2 per day or even PER WEEK!! By 2014, stations started bringing in 90's music to their playlists. Now in 2016, stations like the ones mentioned play more 90's songs than 60's songs and some are even playing EARLY 2000's MUSIC!!! Some stations such as WODS & WDRC have completely changed their format. WODS now features "terrific Top 40 songs" with great artists such as Ariana Grande, Chris Brown, Nikki Minaj & Justin Bieber!! (that being sarcastic) WDRC is now a Classic Rock station.
Here at Oldies 103, first and foremost we will NEVER play Top 40 music. Furthermore, we will always play the Oldies that stations played in the 80's - early 2000's. We will never play an exclusive Classic Hits format. That is our dedication and promise to you.
